2009 Vintage

2009 Authenticity

Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles
64% Syrah | 36% Mourvèdre
Aged for 23 months in 45% new French oak barrels and puncheons
504 cases produced

The 2009 Authenticity with 64% Syrah and 36% Mourvedre is an intensely complex, chewy and textured wine that attests to how serious Mourvedre can be.  Aromas of violets explode off the nose and lend the way to damp forest floor, nutmeg, dried cranberry and black plum.  Flavors are savory and sweet – white pepper, sweet cigar, dried black cherry and smoked game.  A meal in itself – maybe you don’t even need the meat! – Jordan Fiorentini, Winemaker

2009 Block B

Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles
100% Syrah
Aged for 23 months in 43% new French oak barrels and puncheons
182 cases produced

The 2009 Block B is all about minerality and texture . Not only is this wine made from grapes grown exclusively on one 6.5 acre parcel on the Paderewski Vineyard, it is actually a compilation of only the finest barrels made from many different harvest picks from this parcel.  It’s super limited in production and always will be.  Aromas evolve as air hits the glass - dried herbs, sage, dark chocolate, black cherry and ocean air on the nose lead to crushed limestone, black olives and bing cherry on the palate.  Rich in texture and balanced by a line of nice acidity, this wine is a baby and will greatly benefit from cellaring – the longer you can wait the better.  Estimated cellar age: 15+ years. – Jordan Fiorentini, Winemaker

2009 Estate Blend

Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles
60% Syrah | 19% Grenache | 9% Tempranillo | 8% Zinfandel | 4% Mourvèdre
Aged for 23 months in 23% new French oak
1,368 cases produced

Our 2009 Estate Blend is a patchwork of different vineyard blocks and soil types on our Paderewski Vineyard. Predominantly Syrah combined with almost all the other red varieties we have on the estate, this wine gives a sweeping glimpse of the vineyard as a whole alongside all of our innovative and site-specific winemaking practices.  Almost Bordelaise in character, this wine expresses savory and refined fruit character: dried leather, red cherry, tobacco, smoked game and brown spice.  The five different varieties form a cohesive, expressive wine with great texture, length and longevity in bottle. – Jordan Fiorentini, Winemaker

2009 Ingenuity

Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles
65% Syrah | 12% Petite Sirah | 12% Mourvèdre | 7% Grenache | 4% Zinfandel
Aged for 23 months in 42% new French oak barrels and puncheons
752 cases produced

Although predominantly Syrah in percentage, Petite Sirah, Mourvedre and Grenache do not take a back-seat in the 2009 Ingenuity.  One sniff takes you directly to a delicious Rhone experience – sun-drenched bay leaves, warm lavender, raspberry coulis - all framed by vanilla bean and brown spices.  Its palate is astoundingly bright with fruit and acidity, ripe red cherry and blackberry flavors crescendo mid-palate.  Tannins are velvety and the finish lingers with subtle hints of licorice, tobacco and brown tea leaves. – Jordan Fiorentini, Winemaker

2009 Sensibility

Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles
75% Grenache | 21% Mourvèdre | 4% Syrah
Aged in 23 months in 30% new French oak
288 cases produced

Grenache took the leading role in the 2009 Sensibility due to our desire to craft a nuanced wine that dances a little lighter on its toes.  Its nose delivers layers of character and subtlety which echo through its balanced and finessed palate - violets, lavender, citrus essence, raspberry, dried cranberry, crushed limestone.  Pinot-lovers watch out! Have you ever seen west Paso be so feminine? – Jordan Fiorentini, Winemaker

Honoring its heritage with a hefty serving of tannins, this Tempranillo is definitely a red wine drinker’s wine.  Let it breathe before serving and you’ll be served with some delicious aromas of sweet earth, leather, pencil shavings, dried red cherries and vanilla.  The palate shows tobacco leaves, red plum, roasted meat and newly pressed olive oil.  Tannins are intense yet ripe and elegant and will soften and become more velvety in texture with bottle age. – Jordan Fiorentini, Winemaker

2009 Reserva Tempranillo

Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles
100% Tempranillo
Aged for 35 months in 75% new French oak
148 cases produced

The six barrels of 2009 Tempranillo that comprise our Reserva Tempranillo have always felt extremely connected to their Spanish roots.  Since its inception, this wine insisted on being left alone, begging for extended barrel aging in the traditional Rioja ‘reserva’ style.   We followed orders and, except for monthly topping, did not touch these barrels for three years, until the wine’s tannins had softened and flavors concentrated.  Now, after almost one year in bottle, it is time to share our demanding yet mind-opening 100% Reserva Tempranillo.  Two winemaking worlds collide in this striking wine, which seesaws between the old and the new. – Jordan Fiorentini, Winemaker

2009 Veracity

Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles
36% Grenache | 32% Syrah | 32% Mourvèdre
Aged for 20 months in 38% new French oak
374 cases produced

Elegant yet approachable, the 2009 Veracity will charm the Rhone fanatic as well as the curious newcomers.  It is a pure and seamless ‘GSM’ blend with almost equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre that shows the brilliance and finesse of Rhone grapes from our Paderewski Vineyard.  This wine possesses bright, aromatic and mouth-watering tangerine citrus notes that pop out of the glass and linger through the finish – most likely a product of its Grenache component.  In addition, hints of rose petals, dried brush, red raspberry and vanilla are just a few more elements that combine in this velvety-textured Rhone drink. – Jordan Fiorentini, Winemaker

2009 Zinfandel

Paderewski Vineyard, Paso Robles
94% Zinfandel | 6% Mourvèdre
Aged for 20 months in 30% new French oak
209 cases produced

Our 2009 Zinfandel possesses all the delicious, bold American-ness of the variety but slightly refined as if dressed up for a black-tie event. We added a small amount of Mourvedre (6%) to this single block of Primitivo clone 3 Zinfandel to lengthen the mid palate and extend its palate with fine-grained tannins. High-toned red fruits, dried coastal brush and white pepper lend way to a palate packed with fruit, vanilla spice and hint of savory meat. This finely structured Zinfandel lingers on the finish – don’t be afraid to serve it to your old world wine-loving friends! – Jordan Fiorentini, Winemaker
Scores: WA 94; WS 93; RR 94; IWC 92
